The mission style revival building designed by famed architect William H. Odell will live again as we bring our history back to life. As a center for the Cultural Arts of Polk County, this structure will serve as a living history book with a new energy breathed into the walls for students who will learn about the importance of heritage, culture, performance arts, visual arts and much more - Just one of the many uses being considered for this historic structure.
Join us today in our efforts as we save the Thompson Cigar Factory and its rich heritage from planned demolition. This historic building is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, and was the first mechanized cigar factory in Florida. Originally constructed in 1925, at its height of production, this factory rolled 120,000 cigars a day.
The Thompson Cigar Factory is one of only two remaining mission revival style industrial buildings in Florida. Our initial goal of $100,000 for Phase I, will be directed to protecting & preserving the building from further deterioration. Future donations will be for restoration and renovation.
This project will require Community, Government, Corporate and Individual support to reach the critical goals of cultural and historic preservation.
The Thompson Cigar Factory is truly a cultural treasure!! |
